What are some good magazines to publish short stories in?

I’ve written a few short stories, I want to know what kind of magazines I can get them published in. I don’t really care if they offer payment although that would be a bonus.
not anecdotes.

The top magazines are the New Yorker and the Atlantic Monthly in terms of payment and prestige.
If you’re looking for smaller markets or the full range available, I suggest you find a copy of "Novel & Short Story Writer’s Market" published by Writer’s Digest Books at any bookstore or library.

It very much depends on what kind of short stories you wrote. You most likely won’t get a science fiction story published in a literary review, nor a bodice ripper published in a mystery magazine. Your best bet is to identify what sort of stories you’re writing, then check the magazine racks for that sort of magazine. If you read an issue or two and think your story seems like it would fit right in, that’s the market you should try submitting to.

There are great market listings for all sorts of genres in The Writer, Writer’s Digest, and other trade publications. Also great advice on how to make a short story more saleable.

And remember, it is never as simple as write story, send to magazine, get published. Keep the chin up!
