What fashion magazine should I get a subscription to in the US?

Posted on December 26th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 3 Comments »

I’ve already got NYLON.
I want to subscribe to a different fashion magazine. Recommendations, comments, and price rates would be great.

A source would be nice, too.

Thanks.

How does one prepare to become a magazine editor?

Posted on December 21st, 2009 by admin in magazine | 2 Comments »

Well, I’m still in high school. And I’m still not clear about my career options. But all I know is that I can write and it’s something I love doing. Becoming a magazine editor is a dream but I want to know what I have to do in order to get there. And also, what personality traits are required for a job like this? Thanks for the help!

Education/major:
Usually if you want to become an editor, the job requires a college degree in communications, journalism, or English.

Skills Needed:
Editors must be able to express ideas clearly and logically and should love to write. Creativity, curiosity, a broad range of knowledge, self-motivation, and perseverance also are valuable. Editors must demonstrate good judgment and a strong sense of ethics in deciding what material to publish. Editors also need tact and the ability to guide and encourage others in their work.

Good luck!

I would like to start an online magazine subscription company. How do I go about speaking to mag publishers?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 1 Comment »

I have a unique marketing concept and I would like to start an online magazine company that allows people to order right online. I understand that there are many others out there but my unique concept is better than those. I would like some ideas about contacting the magazine publishers and setting the wheels in motion and getting my site up.

Any comments would be appreciated.

You already know this has a lot of competition from big players: Publishers Cleaning House, and others, in addition to the large magazine empires.

Your unique marketing concept must give the magazines a very good reason to add you to their methods of selling subscriptions. In order to attract your attention, you must first convince them:

a. your idea is truly unique, and well beyond what they are using now.

b. you have the financial stability to enter into a joint venture with them. (The last thing they want is for you to collect money from subscribers, and not pay them. This would harm the magazine substantially.) This is a huge factor. The magazines are not going to do this with a start-up that has a chance of failing.

That said, your starting point is to contact some of the major magazine groups. Since you are considering entry into this field, you should already know who the players are. If you don’t know them already , you are likely not suited to enter into this field. Make contact with the circulation manger, and make your pitch.

Good luck.

What is Frankie magazine and what can it be used for?

Posted on December 16th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 1 Comment »

I just bought it today because I love the pictures, patterns and photography in it.

But what kind if magazine is Frankie? What can I do with it?

Also, is it stupid of me to buy the magazine just so I can cut out the pictures from the magazine to make a collage for my walls?

What is a magazine that is as far right as Rolling Stone is to the left?

Posted on December 6th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 2 Comments »

I am politically moderate, but I read Rolling Stone (a rather liberal magazine). They make some good points about issues in some articles. I would like to subscribe to a magazine that can offer an opposing view, just so i can stay happily in the middle or the 2 arguing sides. What is the best magazine to subscribe to for this?

The National Review

Is slamming the magazine into a handgun to drop the slide bad for the gun?

Posted on November 28th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 6 Comments »

I’ve noticed that some handguns will drop their slide automatically if your push the magazine into them hard enough. A freind of mine told me this was bad, while other things I’ve heard is that it is fine and they were designed for this. So is it good or bad?

If slamming a magazine in damages your weapon, get a new weapon. All the ’slam’ does is bump the release through it’s natural range of motion and release the slide faster than you can by hand.

I’ve seen a ton of FTF’s because people didn’t seat the magazine well, and fired thousands of rounds seating it hard enough to work the action.

Seating a mag and running the action, 2 things in firearms you do like you mean it.

How do you thank a magazine editor for including your business?

Posted on November 26th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 2 Comments »

As a wedding related business owner, I’m wondering what other wedding vendors do to thank a magazine editor who includes their business in one of their magazines. A written thank you note doesn’t seem enough, but something bigger may appear like I’m kissing butt or trying too hard.

So, how would you thank a magazine editor for including your business within an issue?

Send a HANDWRITTEN thank you on a notecard. That’s plenty and would be well appreciated.

I want to start my own magazine publishing company. Any suggestions on how to get started?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin in magazine | 2 Comments »

Writing and journalism have been my passion my whole life. My degree is actually in journalism. I’ve just realized that this is REALLY it, but I know it is going to require a lot of work. As a magazine publisher, I get to report again and write my own stories. I know that magazine publishing is a complex business and it is also very risky, but it’s my dream and I’m going to do it. I’d just love to get some advice from you guys on ways to get started.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you’ll inevitably have as well as many you haven’t anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Publish Your Own Magazine, Guide Book, or Weekly Newspaper: How to Start Manage, and Profit from a Homebased Publishing Company by Thomas A. Williams
* Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine (4th Edition) by Cheryl Woodard
* How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak
* Producing Successful Magazines, Newsletters and E-Zines: Great Ideas, Practical Help, and Straightforward Guidance…by Carol Harris

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

magazine collectors beware! How can I get hold of some 2007 issues of the Economists magazine?

Posted on November 19th, 2009 by admin in magazine | 2 Comments »

My lecturer asked me to start reading the Economists magazine. Are there ways to buy or download past issues of the "economists"?

Any halfway decent college library will have a subscription, and many public libraries besides.

There’s also a special student rate for you to subscribe — it’s an excellent magazine for general global news, not just ‘economics’, so you’ll be much better educated by reading it for the next year. Highly recommended for anyone interested in more than what People magazine covers.
