What is a good interior&exterior home design magazine?

Posted on December 21st, 2009 by admin in home magazines | 2 Comments »

My hubby & I are buying a "fixer-upper" home. What’s a good magazine for ideas on both interior & exterior design (including landscaping, decks, construction, architecture, styles, flooring, kitchens, baths, etc….)?

Laurie c has some good suggestions (I’m kind of biased about one in particular!). FYI Fine Homebuilding includes a mix of technical material for contractors and design-oriented material for homeowners.

As for This Old House, you can get a lot of good info on our website, including free video clips showing how to install, repair or maintain all sorts of things around the house. Here’s our directory of home improvement topics:

http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/home-improvement-topics

And if you want to see what’s in the current issue of the magazine, just click on the "Magazine" button located at the far right hand side of the page, under the "Search" window.

By the way, we also send out free electronic newsletters on 5 different topics (one covers design solutions and room makeovers). You can sign up for one or all of them.

Does anyone have the salsa recipe for canning salsa from the Taste Of Home magazine?

Posted on December 6th, 2009 by admin in home magazines | 2 Comments »

I made this salsa last year and it was delicious. I’ve misplaced the recipe and can not find it.

INGREDIENTS

10 cups chopped seeded peeled tomatoes (about 6 pounds)
5 cups chopped onions
3-1/2 cups chopped green peppers (about 1-1/2 pounds)
1-1/2 cups chopped sweet red peppers (about 3/4 pound)
1-1/4 cups white vinegar
6 jalapeno peppers, seeded and finely chopped*
3 garlic cloves, minced
3 teaspoons salt
1-1/2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon pepper

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in a large kettle; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 1-3/4 hours or until mixture reaches desired thickness. Pour hot mixture into hot jars, leaving 1/4-in. headspace. Adjust caps. Process in a boiling-water bath for 15 minutes. Yield: about 6 pints.

Where can I find home decorating magazines or websites?

My family gets Better Homes& Gardens and that has a lot of good decorating tips. If you’re looking for more teen style decorating then AmericanGirl is a good magazine. Try googling decorating ideas and that usually shows up with lots of good sites. Good luck

taste of home recipe for a great summer fruit salad which came from a Taste of Home magazine.?

Posted on November 21st, 2009 by admin in home magazines | 2 Comments »

The salad consists of kiwi fruit, watermelon, bananas, apples, grapes (?) and other fruits and the dressing was a lime dressing with just sugar and water. I cut this recipe out of one of my TOH magazines and have misplaced it.

SUMMER SALAD WITH LIME
DRESSING

(A dessert or a side-dish salad that’s good with or without the dressing. You can refrigerate tightly – covered leftovers for up to 3 days. A delicious cool salad!1)

1/2 c. each lime juice and water
1/2 c. sugar, or to taste
1 lg. banana, sliced diagonally
1 pt. blueberries, divided
2 lg. nectarines, sliced
1 pt. strawberries, hulled and halved
1 c. watermelon balls
1 c. seedless green grapes
1 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
Dark sweet cherries with stems, for garnish (optional)
Creamy Lime-Honey Dressing (recipe follows)

In bowl, stir lime juice, water, and sugar until sugar dissolves. Add banana; set aside. In large serving bowl, preferably clear glass, layer blueberries (reserve 1/2 cup for garnish), nectarines, strawberries, banana, watermelon, and grapes. Garnish with reserved 1/2 cup blueberries, the kiwi, and the cherries. Pour lime-sugar syrup over fruits; cover loosely and chill. To serve, spoon an assortment of fruits and berries into dessert bowls with some of the syrup. Makes 6 generous servings.

Lime Dressing
For dressing, in a small saucepan combine sugar and water. Cook and stir over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat; stir in lime peel, lime juice and poppy seed. *optional* Let cool.

What can I do with hundreds of books[paper&hard backs] magazines [home decor, fasion, antiques, etc.]?

Donate the magazines to an elementary school. I did and my daughter’s art class used them for colages. For the books, donate them to an age appropriate school, or your local library.

Has anyone ever attended one of the ‘TASTE OF HOME’ school shows?

Posted on November 16th, 2009 by admin in home magazines | 1 Comment »

Is it worth attending? As a rule I really like the Taste of Home magazines and cookbooks.

I just kick myself because the last time they came here I didn’t go! Ugh. I hear wonderful things about it, you should go if you have the opportunity.
