What is a good science magazine, specifically about chemistry?

Posted on November 30th, 2010 by admin in magazine | 1 Comment »

Chemistry is my passion, and I’d really enjoy a magazine about it. I’ve be content with any good science magazine, though, as long as it includes chemistry in it sometimes, if not all the time.
I know there are a few out there, so if you could list the pros and cons, that would be excellent! Thank you.

I like Scientific American – all scientists should read.

Chemistry is my passion too – but SciAm keeps you well rounded.

What’s the difference between Golf digest magazine and golf magazine?

Posted on November 24th, 2010 by admin in magazine | 1 Comment »

What’s the difference between Golf digest magazine and golf magazine? and which one do you prefer?

I’ve been a Golf Magazine subscriber off and on this past decade. My brother has been a Golf Digest subscriber. There isn’t much difference between the two magazines. Each has pro golfers as contributing editors to provide tips as well as teaching pros. One difference that I’m not totally sure about is that one is cheaper than the other when bought from the news stand. For some reason before I got a subscription, I noticed Golf Magazine was cheaper when I bought it from a book store. The other thing that I’ve noticed is that Golf Magazine has an issue dedicated to the Top 100 Courses in America and the around the world. I’ve not noticed this in an issue of Golf Digest. Again, I’m not saying that they don’t do it. I just don’t remember seeing it in any issue of my brothers that I’ve looked at. Both do an equipment issue promoting new equipment for the new year from all manufacturers. For me I just like Golf Magazine better. It’s an aesthetic thing.

How to get into magazine work/editoral position without journalism degree?!?

Posted on November 22nd, 2010 by admin in magazine | 1 Comment »

I just graduated college with a liberal arts degree and had little idea of what I wanted to do. I realized I would love to work as an editor for a women’s magazine and it seems like there are no opportunities if you didn’t major in journalism. Even unpaid internships need experience at least in some way. Anything I can do to help my chances at getting a job or intern position at Self or Shape magazine??? Thanks in advance!

Doing an internship in journalism abroad might make you stand out among others. At http://www.linktodiversity.com there are number of opportunities to intern in journalism. Hopefully, you will find the one you like.

Which magazines have the most clothing discounts and coupons inside?

Posted on November 21st, 2010 by admin in discount magazines | 2 Comments »

to stores like american eagle, macys, forever 21, etc.
thanks

I’m not sure which magazines are best but there are lots of sites with discount codes and printable vouchers if you search for them on Google without the need to buy a magazine.

For example, you can get 10% off online at www.bluebanana.com if you enter the code OBB2300 at the checkout :)

How many religious organizations/organizations give away free books/magazines based on voluntary donations?

Posted on November 19th, 2010 by admin in discount magazines | 5 Comments »

I went into a discount book store today and found several publications distributed and used by Jehovah’s Witnesses, that we give away for no charge but accept voluntary donations. These books had prices on them, so I went up to the register and told the guy that these books were not for sale. He wasn’t concerned and just gave them to me.

Then I wondered, how many other religious organizations or churches, places of worship and other people just give away their publications and literature freely, only asking for voluntary donations if ones can?

To my knowledge, only Jehovah’s Witnesses do this.

What magazine subscriptions do you have?

Posted on November 13th, 2010 by admin in magazine subscriptions | 2 Comments »

I was going to subscribe to some magazines, but there are so many that I cannot narrow it down to just a few. I want to know what you enjoy reading and what you might recommend. Any ideas would be helpful!
Here is a little bit about me:
I am in my mid-20’s, educated, loves history, loves to cook, vegetarian, Southern, loves keeping up with health issues, loves animals, loves humor, no kids, not married yet, doesn’t watch much television.
Hopefully that is helpful in order to help suggest some magazines I might like. Thanks!!!

Here are my suggestions:
Cosmopolitan
Oprah
Martha
Food Network recipe magazine
National Geographics
Vegetarian Times
Fitness
Self
Southern Living (great recipes too)

Hope this helps!

Best Solar Power Home related magazines?

Posted on November 11th, 2010 by admin in home magazines | 3 Comments »

We’re planning to incorporate Solar design features into our next home – actually, we’re looking at wind & solar. Which magazines are worth subscribing to? Which are not?
I should specificy that we’re more interested in passive solar than in solar panels.

Actually, check out some of the links on http://www.builditsolar.com

If you are going to do much of the work yourself, you will be sadly disappointed by what is available in print:

Homepower magazine http://www.homepower.com for example, it most often reads like a sales brochure, because "hands on" to a number of people usually means buying most of the system ready made in a kit. Hands on for me is breaking out the soldering iron and doing point to point wiring on components to construct the regulators (often called charge controlelrs.) Too much chaff for a hands on person to find useful. Some of the ads are useful.

Nuts and Volts http://www.nutsvolts.com/ is a bit better, but their topical coverage is far ranging so you do not always get as much as you would like. Spendy, might be better to sheck it out at the bookstores and buy it off the newstand when a decent article appears.

Mother Earth news http://www.motherearthnews.com is pretty good, but the best bang for the buck there is to buy their archives on CD rom, which is 3 disks, broke down by decade. There is a fair amount of substance, sometimes you encounter an article that sought to convert one item over to another, only it would have been much less work and cost for them to have started out from ground level and construct (with used parts) the same thing, which they sought to construct in the first place, a solar charged electric tractor is one specific item I have come to mind as one the author of the article could have done better. You might find the book they published "The Mother Earth News Handbook of Homemade Power," which is not real good for specifics in some areas, but is good for some ideas if you are good at working from thumbnail sketches, you can fill in the blanks where there are gaps in detail. The book was written more as a "primer" than a complete compillation.

For your wind systems, there is a lot to be found at http://www.lindsaybks.com Hugh Piggott has written a few good books on the home construction of windmills. The LeJay Manual is a good reprint that has a lot of good info for home constructing- down to the wooden propeller profiles. As well as the book "Generator Secrets."

One of the good sources for materials and tools supplies and systems is Northern Tool http://www.northerntool.com

One thing on propeller materials- never us ABS and never use PVC. As tempting as those can be they break. When they break, the blades will go for a great distance in modest winds. They can kill too.
